Sunsplash!

The program of the House of RasTafari in this year’s Sunsplash is available and we were in it!

So we left for a few days to the beautiful scenery of Osoppo to join our new friends. We spent three days and two nights of impossible sleep and filmed, interviewed and exchanged opinions with Italian Rastafari.

These Italian form a small but vibrant community, they have published books and meet on festivities. One of their main aims is to be recognised as one of Italy’s religious communities, which is the way they think will lead to the public acceptance of their faith.

One of the days, Brother Carmelo held a talk on the fascist occupation of Ethiopia. He and all the younger brothers and sisters think that education is a very important tool and are very informed and keen to discuss on any issue concerning their faith or their community. This faith is considered universal and moves away from the emphasis on Blackness we had read from the Jamaican community.

Our stay in the House of RasTafari was a great way to discover the particularities of an European community as well as an opportunity to taste some great Ital cooking.

We also saw our adored David Katz in action, and even alone, but we were to shy to go talk to him
